It’s getting real!
We are two weeks out from our section hike of the AT. I’m in full logistics mode and here’s what we have so far:
- Itinerary and Planned Mileage – It’s important to be flexible and especially so on a 80ish mile hike in Georgia during the height of summer. It will be hot and humid and water sources aren’t always reliable. Fortunately, this section of the AT has lots of bail out points and routing options to accommodate changes as we start hiking
- Base for beginning/ending – Hiawasee is a town towards the end of our hike and we have a hotel we will stay at at the beginning and end of our hike where we can safely leave our car
- Transportation – Found a wonderful shuttle driver who will take us to Springer and also pick us up at the last trail head as well as a town transfer on resupply/zero days
- Resupply and Recharge (and laundry) – We are resupplying twice during this section hike and taking zero days on both. I am mailing a resupply box to the first stop and the second stop is back in Hiawasee so will leave a box with the hotel/in our vehicle
- Meal Plans and final shopping – We have a lot of hiker meals but it is snacks and lunch items that I think need a bit of purchasing for.
- Mail Ahead – I am planning to send out our resupply package by mid-week next week so that the hostel receives it in time.
I also need to finalize my pack – this is a work in progress.
