This was my longest hike ever I think at 13.3 miles and over 3k of elevation gain.
But this is absolutely the most beautiful part of the AT we have done and only 30 minutes from our house.
The day started off rough. We had originally planned to do the Mt Mitchell trail but got off to a late start and the parking lot was full by the time we got to the trailhead.
This meant we had to double back on what was already an hour drive.
We finally started at Sam’s Gap at midday.
Fortunately, it was a nice cool day and we made good time.
George was with us in his new hiking shoes and lemme tell you, young fit people really have no business being so light on their feet.
This week I had my period and some travel plans and so did not get any workout in save for a short cardio session on Thursday morning.
I thought I was going to die on this hike but I actually didn’t. Now this doesn’t mean I wasn’t slow but I was really enjoying it even on the uphill.
Every uphill was rewarded with beautiful views.
The wild flowers were also coming in which was really wonderful to behold.
The panoramic mountain view from the top of Big Bald was worth the journey.
Highly recommend this one for everyone!
